Cardboard Arcade Math Project!

We are starting our cardboard arcade math project.  This is based on "Caine's Arcade", the story of a 9 year old boy in L.A. who built a full games arcade out of cardboard.  Right now we are busy gathering our materials and cardboard.  Before we begin to build our arcade, we will be practising how to make a budget, adding, subtracting and multiplying with different money amounts, measuring our materials needed and calculating what we will need to build on a $50.00 budget.  Here is the inspirational video, enjoy!

Roald Dahl's "The Witches"

We are almost finished reading our second Roald Dahl novel, "The Witches."  It was great fun making the witches out of clay, with their blue saliva and wigs.  Next, we are watching the movie version of the book, and then on to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."  Yummy!

Roald Dahl-The BFG: We are almost finished reading our very first Roald Dahl novel of the year, The BFG.  We love the way that Roald Dahl invents his own words, like whizzpopper  and human beans.  We are looking forward to our next Roald Dahl novel called "The Witches", just in time for Halloween!

WELCOME TO THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR!

Welcome to the Learning Centre, Room 102 and the new 2013-2014 school year!  The September Learning Centre newsletter is coming home on Monday, September 9th!  Please check our blog often as we will be posting updates daily.  I am excited to be introducing Project Based Learning in the classroom this year.  We will post our project details on the blog and look forward to your comments.  I look forward to working together with you as we get ready for another year of great learning!    Sincerely, Mrs. Astin!

AWESOME BIKE PROJECT IN THE L.C.! BY CHRIS!

CHECK OUT THE AMAZING PICTURE OF THIS BICYCLE, THE "LEAN, GREEN, RECYCLED MACHINE"  WHICH CHRIS HAS BUILT COMPLETELY OUT OF RECYCLED MATERIALS FOUND IN OUR SCHOOL SUPPLY ROOM!  THIS IS A PROTOTYPE OF A LARGER SCALE PROJECT THAT WILL INVOLVE USING A FULL SIZE BICYCLE AND MOTORIZED PARTS.  WELL DONE CHRIS!

TOMATOSPHERE

THE STUDENTS IN THE LEARNING CENTRE WILL BE PART OF THE TOMATOSPHERE PROJECT IN THE NEXT MONTH OF SCHOOL.  TOMATOSPHERE IS A CURRICULUM -BASED PROGRAM FOR SCHOOLS THAT INVOLVES STUDENTS IN A GERMINATION EXPERIMENT WITH SETS OF TOMATO SEEDS-A CONTROL GROUP AND A GROUP THAT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO SOME ASPECT OF THE SPACE ENVIRONMENT.  THEY WILL LEARN ABOUT AGRICULTURE IN SPACE, EXPERIENCE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES WITH PLANTS AND WORK TOGETHER WITH THEIR TEAM TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.
